ASSISTING THE HIGH SCHOOL BOY
THOSE who followed the suggestion of the headmaster of the Whakatane School (Mr I. Hubbard) which Avas brought before, the Borough Council last week, could not but have been struck with the vision and insight Avhich must haA r e • animated the proposer when he first formulated the scheme. Every businessman, farmer or tradesman to-day remembers only too well the long period of indecision which exercised his mind before finally his choice of occupation was made. Even then without practical experience and influenced by the glowing stories of others, who usually had had no insight themselves into the callings they praised, how many of us stepped off on the wrong foot and eventually made a change, at the cost of several priceless years of training. Mr Hubbard's proposal aims at reducing the number of square pegs in round holes by assisting the boy in the choice of his life's occupation by practical personal contact. He is to be warmly commended upon his scheme which we sincerely trust will attain that wider adaptation it so richly merits.
