FARM MORTGAGES
THEN AND NOW
Devoting part of his speech at Edgecumbe on Tuesday night to comparative returns and comments on them to> illustrate the financial position "then and now" of the people, notably farmers of the Dominion/ the Minister of Internal Atfairs:, Mr Parry, said that in the period 1922-35 the value) of, the mortgages registered was £404,,936,590. Mortgages discharged during the same period amounted to £281,626,575, leaving a mortgage debit of £123,310,000 odd. When the present Government too'lc charge in 1935 and up to this year the total value of mortgages registered was £135,934,954. The value of the mortgages discharged during the same period was £135,456,,970, leaving a mortgage debit of £470,983,, as. against the previous debit of £123,310,000 odd.
A moist amazing aspect of the figures quoted, the Minister said, was shown during the last, two years during which the jjcople had paid off in excess of mortgages registered £4,497,,303. The fact was revealed that not only had the jDeople been able to pay off the mortgages they had raised, but they had been able' to wipe off arrears accumulated under the mismanagement of, past Governments.
