Though Rotorua retained the coveted Kurungaituku Basketball trophy,, the performance of. the Whakatanc representatives may well be described as the finest put up by the local Association to date.
The, team comprised: Misses Margaret Howal, Joy Bridger, Margaret Robbins (centres). Pal Francis, Ruby [lowa t, Jolinnna Anderson (goalsV), Natalie Jacobs!, Sliirlcy Cave, Isabel Dunslan and Jean Cutler (defence). Of this team two members Misses. Cave and Jacobs were selected i'or the; Bay of Plenty Reps In the proposed match with Wai'kato. "Wliakatanc-; only lost one game out of five iind were third in the competition being beaten by llotenia and. Matamata both of which gained the possible. Itotonia beat Matamata in the play-off, ■Details "A' the play were: Ist round: Rotorua l.~> v W'hakatanc 7. 2nd round: AVhakatane l(i v Matamata R 8. 3rd round: W'hakatane 12 v W'aikato 7. I.lli round: W'hakatane 15 v Rotorua Catholic '■). r>tlr round: 'W'hakatane 10 v..Cambridge 8. Tli.-- faille in the fourth round was definitely W'hakatane's best and the team earned the highest prai.se for their combination and keenness. The locals also won second place in the march i'rom the .station in which some 12 teams participated.
