The Real Menace of Japan Japan is credited with being the only nation which has completely combated this sheet erosion, says Forest and Bird. She did it by maintaining her nativexforests backed by the people's love of trees. This fact makes one shudder be.cause ferti.lc soil produces, a strong virile race and, although wc shall probably drive Japan back this time, her population is overflowing and she will come at us again and again at opportune times to her. The Strangling Rata One of the most interesting peculiarities of the. rata vine species, says a contributor to Forest and Bird, is that if the seed finds a resting place high up in the fork of a tree it germinates there and as the young plant grows, bigger it sends., down roots to the soil: below. These roots move down and send out side shoots, which eventually encircle the supporting tree. Later on these roots grow together to build up a trunk, and in the end strangle the original ' tree.
