MATCH AT KATIKATI LOCAL BOYS WIN 91-3 Despite the evidence of the large score put up by the Whakatane District High School against Katikati High School at Katikati last Wednesday, play was fairly even, and tlie spectators Avitnessed some very good football. Most of the scoring for Whakatane was done by the backs who put up an excellent performance while the forwards, although they did not show so> much dash as the backs, were a good, solid pack. The teams were:— Whakatane (yellow): Sloane,, Conway, Patterson, Head,. Law, Rutherford, Crozier, N. Raureti, L. Raureti, Savage, Delves, Bohwell,, Tiepa and Davis. Katikati (red): I. Boyes, Emerton, Thomas, H. Boyes, Buchanan, Bloor, Earl, Ward, Henry, Rye, Nettlingham, Samson, Sharp, Holmes and Prior. The game opened at a good pace, L. Raureti leading Whakatane to the attack. Scooping up the ball he made an excellent rush right down the field through the centre of the opposing pack, but Prior grassed hiin short of the line and a set scrum followed. The ball came out and. downfield,, but the Whakatane backs gained control again and took it back to Katikati's quarter., A penalty kick relieved the situation although the reds were still kept on the dmefensive. Once, again the Whakatane line got away and Head, cutting infield, gathered, in and dived over the line scoring Wliakatane's first try. Boswell* converted. Back at half-way, play grew tighter, the heavier local pack keeping Katikati we'll in check. N. Raureti initiated a movement to get the ball out to the wing, but Conway cut in and fairly flew over the line giving Whakatane another touchdown. Tiepa's kick was good.
Some hard forward work followed and play became tighter. Davis led a rush downfield, Prier scooped up and went to kick but Law, coming from nowhere, took the ball out of his hands and shot over the. line. Bos,well piloted the leather well between the posts and the changeover saw the score at 15-U 1 in Whakatane's favour.
Play resumed with a wi'll and a penalty kick gave Katikati three points right at the start. Tiepa evened things a few minutes later however, by scoring an unconverted try whilst Delves and L. Raureti made a touchdown each shortly after. Boswcll converted both the latter tries.
A penalty kick gave the Whakatane boys another advantage, and Boswell, hanging round on the edge of the 1 pack gathered in and dived over the. line bringing the score to 31-3. Tiepa's kick fell short and the final Avhistle went bringing to a close a highly spectacular game. Mr T. Polley refereed. Junior Game A junior game between the. two primary schools which was also played brought to the fore, quite a number of promising future rep. players. For a primary school team they played remarkably well, the forwards packing at. every opportunity, and the backs playing a fast loose game. Throughout the match movements were initiated according to plan, and individual rushes gave way to co-operative plajr. Tries were scored for Whakatane by Laughton, Seebeck, Linwood (2) and Patterson (2), Goodall converted two and Linwood one, bringing the final score to 22-8 in Wha'katane's favour. Basketball Three school basketball teams, also met Rep. teams from Katikati in a friendly competition. The results were: —High School A beat Katikati High School A 32-19; High School B beat Katikati High School B 19-1; Primary School beat Katikati Primary School 23-5.
