A Division of Labour The forest may be divided into, several horizontal layers in each of which certain birds carry out a particular function, says Forest and Bird. Thus on the forest floor birds like the kiwi and the weka forage for insects in various stages- of development. Higher up,, among the thicker branches and the lower part of the trunks of the trees, other j birds search every nook and cranny \ for insects. Still higher up,, among « the leaves and smaller branches, i other birds, usually of a more agile < nature than those operating lower down, are to be found hunting for ( food. Then above the tree-tops are 1 to be found those birds that catch t insects on tho wing, the fantail being a wel'l-known example. Thus do the native insectivorous birds 1 divide their labour in the forest. 1
