4. NGATIAWA DEVELOPMENT SCHEME OFFER FROM DEPARTMENT Writing the Whakatane County Council, the Undersecretary of the Native Department, advised that, the department would be able to pay at least a portion of the current rates on the Ngatiawa Development Scheme. The accounts showed heavy accumulated losses but there Avas a small surplus on the year's farming operations. As the rates coA T cred a large area of unimproved and unproductive. land which w as not economically farmable, the council was asked if it would look into the matter with a view to striking the area off the rating roll. The coifncil was also asked if it Avould consider the matter and discuss it Avitli the department's local officers and Avould be contacting the council' in the near future. After a brief discussion it Avas decided that the Native Department be advised that the council, to assist the Ngatiawa Scheme will accept .10 per cent of General and Hospital rates 1943-4.-1 year, Loan inj tercst. rates to be paid in full that this offer apply to rates, 19-13-4-1 year only.
