CONVALESCENT MEN ON LEAVE AMERfCANS LIKE OUR TOWN The twelve convalescing American servicemen who - recently spent ten days in Whakatane as guests of various local residents under the Red Cross scheme, were unanimous in the warmth of their praise for the town and the hospitality which was showered on them by the citizens. J hev were particularly enthusiastic about the display by Maori children ol the Paroa School whom they visited last Friday as the guests of Mr and Mrs H. Hauesler. The children too were deeply impressed, but were definitely on their toes and gave an energetic interpretation of haka,, dance and action song to the delight of the American visitors. One of the "doughboys" was literally stormed, when he announced that by calling he was a "feowboiy from Nevada." The magic word; broke down all reserve and the soldier, luckily a hail-fellow-well-met type of individual was, beseiged by the admiring youngsters until he had delivered up all, his badges and buttons as mementos. Those responsible for the entertainment of the men had arranged an attractive programme for them dating from the time of their arrival on Tuesday, August 3rd. Details were:— Wednesday: Inspection of Rangitaiki Dairy Co's factory at Edgecumbe. Musical evening at residence of Mr and Mrs A. G. Allan. Thursday: Trip round Hillcrest, Heads and Plains with Mrs' J. White and Party. Red Gross concert in evening. Friday: Visit to Paroa Native School and to Paper Mills. Evening Caledonian dance. Saturday: Trip to Ohope. Evening Hosts and Hostesses guests of Chief Sgt Fairchild at Regent Theatre and later entertained at residence of Mr and Mrs W. Sullivan. Sunday: Fishing trip at Ohiwa. Evening at Allan's bach. Monday: Round of visits. Farewell dance at residence of Mr and Mrs A. G. Allan. The. visitors departed on Tuesday expressing the utmost appreciation for all that had been done for them. The list of hostesses were Mesdames L. Huddle, J. White, C. Zinsli, E. Armstrong and A. G.
