AWARD DIFFICULTIES
TIME FOR STABILISATION
LOCAL MEMBER'S OPINION
The time had arrived when the Minister of Labour should take into consideration the consolidation of the awards of the building and other allied trades, said Mr W. Sullivan, M.P. for J3ay of Plenty, when speaking in the House of Representatives. Mr Sullivan said, there was a variance in some of the awards, and it would be an advantage to industry if they were brought more or less under one heading and made to corelate as' far as possible, with the Factories Act. Mr Sullivan .said he would also like to know what provision the Minister was making for young men serving in the forces, who,, when demobilised, would still have two or three years of their apprenticeship period, to serve. Another matter was that recently his attention had been called to the fact tha£' there were certain manufacturing concerns, more or less in the clothing industry, which were operating a .system Avhereby they disposed of some of their materials to' the workers after five o'clock. These material were taken homo, made up, and then resold to the firms. The prac-: tice penalised manufacturers honouring the award.
