FISH SUPPLIES
DIFFICULTIES IN THE BAY
IJVIR W. SULLIVAN'S STATEMENT
The opinion tljat steps should' be taken so as to ensure a better supply of fish was expressed by Mr W. Sullivan, M.P. for Bay * -of Plenty in the House of Representatives when the position of the fishing industry was under consideration. Mr Sullivan, said there had been -certain problems and difficulties in his district, and. lie had represented the matter to the Minister from "time to time with a view to having the present regulations so adjusted in order to get. a sufficient supply *of cheap fish for the public. Surely, that was the whole basis of the retgiilations, and the regulations had not given the public that additional supply of fish. In fact, those in the country districts were worse off today than they were prior to the regulations coming into of)cration. Mr Sullivan said that the general 'opinion of the members of the com--mittee (of which he was one) was that some definite attempt should % made so to adjust those regulations that a more full supply of slish could be obtained in the country districts. Mr Sullivan said he could quote ■~a case where the fishermen, the wholesaler and the retailer were licensed. under the licensing system. It so happened in some centres that the wholesaler was also a fisherman .and had a retail license. All the fishermen had to put their catches through the wholesale house, and then rationing took place and the wholesaler decided how much should be given to each retailer. It was safe to say that, the fisherman, who jnight have a retailer's license and not a wholesaler's, license, may get ifrom the wholesaler a lesser quantity of fish than he put in. That ■could not possibly be in the interests of bringing about a cheap and full supply of fish for the public. The consensus of opinion of the committee was that the whole matter should* be thoroughly investigated with a view to so amending the regulations that a better supply of fish could be obtained.
