Because money Avhieh in normal times would be spent- in maintenance Avas not so spent butf: Avas being taxed,, a suggestion was put forward by the chairman of the Mangatoiki Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd., Mr R. H. Free, at the annual meeting of suppliers that the Government should be asked to consider a proposal to pay a proportion of dairy colnpany advances into farmers' national saA'ings accounts. Suppliers Avould be permitted Jx> direct dairy companies to pay in a proportion to be fixed by the Minister of Marketing, that amount to be exempted from taxation when certified by the company as paid to the suppliers' national savings accounts. In the meantime, said Mr Free, that, money Avould be available to the Government for war purposes and in the future would be avail-, able to the farmer to meet his maintenance and top-dressing costs. Avhen materials and labour were again available for those purposes.
