WHAT OUR FOREFATHERS DID
In his" new book, "The Years of Endurance," Arthur Bryant has reminded us of the hardihood of our forefathers, during the 22 years oi: the. Napoleonic Wars. In 1797, he says, after we had Avon the naval victor}' oi' (lamperdown, a Ayave of. patriotic feeling swept over Great Britain. The Government was showered Avith gifts of money from all classes of people. Pitt, avlio Avas Prime Minister,, gave £2,000. Every member of his Government gave a fifth of his official income. The Ban'k of England gave £20.000. A cotton manufacturer in Bury gave £10,000. His name Avas Robert Peel. His son later became Prime Minister. In the little village of Blagdon, in Somerset, the poor A'illagers went in a body to their vicar and asked to be double taxed. This AvaA'e of patriotic feeling rose still higher in the following year,, Avhen Nelson completely destroyed the French fleet in the Battle of the Nile.
