NATIONALISATION IN PORTUGAL
Under what is known a.s tlie corporative .state, a system of government that has obtained in Portugal for some years, and more recently in Spain under Franco, nationalisation is practised, even more extensively • than in states and countries Avhere the governments are socialist. "Recently, states "The Economist,," a measure calling for the. nationalisation of certain types of foreign limited companies carrying on in Portugal Avas passed by the National Assembly but Avhich, as yet, lias not. been gazetted and therefore has not the force, of knv. international considerations are said to influence the position. Another proposal being discussed by the National Assembly is that other companies, than banking and insurance, which are already liable to official inspection, should have state-appointed representatives "to ensure that their operations are conducted in such a. way as may bestcontribute to the common good." Commercial opinion is much perturbed by the proposal which at best means bureaucratic interference,.and at the Avorst, complete control or nationalisation.
