WELCOME HOME TRIBUTE TO RETURNED MEN 1 "■ V The Waimana Hall was packed with a large crowd, of local residents and visitors from the • surrounding" district last Thui'sday evening, when a dance was given in honour of local men home on furlough, and visiting men of the lorces.. Two men were also l'arewelled. The hall was very neatly decorated with greenery and flags, and the. stage was bright with bowls of flow-, ers. The dance music was playetk. by the Casa Loina orchestra, and Mr D. Boynton acted as M.C. The novelty dances proved most popular. A cooked fowl for competition, was won by Miss P. McConncll and a cooked tunkey by Mr R. Fleming. The takings totalled £25 including - £1 donated by the Maori Patriotic Committee and donations from the competitions. Mr 11. Bell most kindly dei'raj'ed the. expenses for the music and gave the hall free of charge, his help being greatly ap-; predated. ' After a much enjoyed supper had been served, the returned, men present were Ave!coined by Mr J. L. Burnett, ami Mrs Wyldc, secretary of the Patriotic Committee, presented each guest with an envelope and its contents, as a small token of appreciation of what they had done in the past years. The men weir coined were Spr H. Addison, Spr Dl Cain, Sgt Kinsella, Sgt W. L. Cooper, Sgt R. Ivnowles, Tpr E. Backhouse, Tpr W. Gallagher, Tpr R. Rawson, Driver Falkner, Pte E/ Wade, Driver A. Proffitt (wounded), I > te W. August,, Pte C. Te Marangi (wounded), Pte T. Maui, A. C. I. Heath. After the presentations Sgt. .A. Kinsella, in a most capable manner and on behalf of his companions, thanked Mr Burnett and Mrs «Wylde. and all present for the most wonderful welcome tendered them. Musical honours followed, sung with great enthusiasm. Mr N. Macdonald,, in the. absence of the chairman, Mr Robert Ward-; law, then called on L.A.C. L. Mac* donald. and Stoker Brian Burnett to come, forward and accept a wallet and its contents from the people of Waimana and Nukuhou North, and conveyed to them the best of wishes , and luck in their future careers. L.A.C. Macdonald most suitably responded on behalf of. Stoker Bur-? nett and himself, thanking all for the gift and. pleasant evening. Dancing continued until the early hours.

TREE PLANTING CEREMONY AT, WAIMANA f OPENING OF CLASSROOM 1 here Avas a largo gathering of parents and children at"'the Wair in ana School last. Wedncsdaj' afternoon, Avhen the new classroom -was declared open by the chairman,, Mr Robert Ward law. The speaker welcomed all present, and stated that / it Avas gratifying it Avas to se.e so many parents attending. The disp]ay of drill, folk dancing etc., \A T cre excellent, all pupils taking part. Vocal-" items and. recitations were also greatly appreciated. A basketball match, between the senior girl pup* ils and the old girls;, resulted in a Avin for the latter team by 8 goals to fj. The tree planting ceremony followed, the ex-School Committee members, present members, the chair- , man, prefects jjlanting two for • thestaff and Tpr Ted Backhouse, a returned man, all planting separate trees on various sites. A delicious afternoon tea AA*as then, served and those present later inspected the classroom and the children's work which Avas on display. » The teaching staff must be. congratulated on the work which was of ai high standard. Mr Bell, the headmaster, who is leaving Waimana shortly, .was pre - sen ted with gifts- from the pupils; tAVo pupils making the presentation. Mr Bell most suitably thanked th<*.-> children for the gifts.
