RED CROSS AFFAIRS
JULY MEETING HELD WI DESPREAD ACTIVITIES Tlie monthly meeting of the Whakatane lied Cross-Patriotic Committee took place, in the Borough Council Chambers, on July Hi, Mrs. Sullivan being in the chair. The" chairwoman reported that monthly food parcels were being sent to two local boys overseas who were, being poorly supplied where they were. Mrs Mo ran. Lady Gal way Guild, said she had packed and despatched three cases containing -111 garments during the last month. V.A.D. Mrs Prideaux, Lady Superintendent, stated that the V.A.s were holding regular fortnightly meetings, but classes were to lapse during the period that Colonel Prideaux Avas home on leave. The Detachment liad donated £2 to the Junior Jied Gross Circles as prizes for their 21st birthday competitions. Miss M. Rigliton "would, represent the Detachment at the North Island committee meeting to be held in Palmersion North on July 30.
Revenue From Shop Mrs Sullivan reported that since she had been converter for the shop, approximately £120 had been raised for Patriotic Funds, and £70 for Red Cross. The committee; had received a request, l'roxn headquarters for a donation towards the sum of £500 "which had been sent to Turkey for the relief of distress after the recent bad earthquake there. It will be recalled that, after the disastrous Hawke\s Bay earthquake the Turkish Red Crescent "was one of the first members of the League of Red Cross Societies to send financial assistance; to New Zealand. An appeal had also been received on behalf of the Chinese Red Gross.. I,t. was therefore decided to put all the shop proceeds lor one month to Red Cross funds. The major part of the ladies Patriotic quota had already been raised. It was also decided that a special cake and flower day be. held at the shop on Saturday July 24. * Sewing and Knitting The Sewing Circle had received a further supply of 30 pairs of cutout pyjamas from the Joint Council. The Institute had taken 15 pairs.
Mrs Timbs reported that linished knitted articles had been received from the Institute and High School girls. More knitters were still needed. The following garments had been completed and despatched: For Patriotic (May) 28 balaclavas, 2 skull caps, 1 sleeveless pullover, K) pairs socks, 8 pairs mittens, 23 scarves; (Jujie) 21 balaclavas, 8 scarves, 6 pairs mittens, ]„ pair gloves, 3 pairs socks. For Joint Council: 4 pairs socks, 1 long-sleeved pullover, 1 waistcoat, 1 pair bedsocks.. Mrs Timbs asked for approval to get 2 long-sleeved cardigans knitted b\' machine, this was given and donations of ,"j - each towards the cost of same were handed in by Mesdames. Barry, Sisam, Sullivan and Tippett. MrsgTimbs said that a resident of Thornton had had a letter from two Polish soldiers in India thanking her for pullovers she had iknitted. Parcels Despatched Comforts Committee. Mrs Shapley reported that the committee had packed 78 parcels, and the Institute 5, making a total of 83. The Patriotic Fund had supplied funds for the parcels. For the Entertainments Committee Mrs Armstrong stated that six boys had been farewelled during the month, three: publicly and three at their homes. They were: l" letchei, K. Jarrett, Lt Clark, Lt Butler, Lt Brittain (all Army) and D. Boon (Air Force). Forthcoming Concert Discussion took place re the offer, of the Edgecumbe concert party to put on the show in Whakatane for the benefit of. Patriotic Funds. It was decided to accept the party's Lienerous oiler. Ihe holding of .1 function in honour of the men now home from overseas on leave was also discussed, and the secietar\ was instructed to approach other organisations in the town with the idea of forming a committee to deal with the matter. Mrs Sullivan said she had givfen away to needy cases several sets, ol clothing, and also given four coats lo children badly wanting them. Her action was approved.
