CHILDREN'S SOCIAL
FANCY DRESS BALL GAY SCENES AT KING STREET The plain and fancy dress ball promoted by ladies f',rom the upper end of Domain Road 1 in aid' of the Red Cross and General Purposes Fund, which took place in the Caledonian Hall last Tuesday was an unqualified success, the hall being- packed from beginning to end and the children in dresses of all descriptions having the time of their young lives. The parade of fancy dresses -\vas one of the most colourful sights seen in town for many a day reminding us most forcibly of those good, old pre-war days when the younger generation paraded to the Winter Show in all manner of costumes and made one of the brightest attractions in the Peoples Day Programmes. With the war news as*, it is we are all earnestly hoping that those days will soon be with us again. To get back to the dance, the M.C. was Mr W. Arnel, who made a splendid j,ob of that office and who would be difficult to beat as an announcer. The. grand inarch which started at 7.30 p.m. was directly under his control and showed oft' admirably the wide variety of costumes worn. Those participifting ranged from tiny tots arrayed as fairies, .gnomes and Victorian ladies to older boys and girls who favoured the pirate and. cowboy rigs and the p:rrettc and national costumes. The winners were:— Best dressed boy under 12: Billy Archer (United Nations). Best dressed girl under 12: Kay Saunders (Fairy). Best dressed boy under 12: L. Edwards (Aviator). Best, dressed girl over 12: H. Carter (Jockey). Specials: Boy, Tan Dainton; girl, Erin Grose. Coupon-free costume: Arthur Cole; mystery pri/.e: Miss Dines. Supper was attended to by a capable ladies committee after which the iloor was vacated, to the adult section which carried the evening through till midnight dancing to bright music. The door takings totalled over £18 the bulk of which will be. handed over to the fund above mentioned.
