GOODWILL SUBSIDY

! WELCOME HOME TO MEN G OVERNMENT'S G ESTURE The text of the message from the Prime Minister to all local bodies in connection with the return of so many men from the Middle East on extended furlough, was read at the meeting of the Whakatane County Council last Tuesday when it was decided' to write thanking the Government for its gesture and to take advantage of the £1 subsidy offered. The. message to the chairman (Mr J. L. Burnett) from the Hon. P. Eraser read :—"The return from the Middle East of the men of. the 2nd N.Z.E.F. on furlough provides an opportunity for the Government to express its appreciation of the magnificent services rendered, b}* them. For this reason the Government wholeheartedly desires to be elated with any welcomc and entertainments you on behalf of the people of your district are arranging for members of. the second N.Z.E.F. now home on furlough and all other such members olherwise. now in New Zealand, after service overseas. For that purpose the Government would be glad if you would see your way to accept from it a contribution at the rate of one pound for each member soi welcomed and entertained. Nature time and place or places of welcome and entertainment are matters entirely for your decision as the head of your district and I realise that in country areas it. will probably not be possible to have one central function. Here again it is recognised that at what places; within the. County functions should be held is a matter for you."

Commenting on the above Mr Burnett said that in conversation with the Mayor of Whakatane, they had both agreed that the better way would be to allow each centre to entertain its own men, following the formal civic welcome. This was now being done and it would be for the organisations promoting the entertainments to make application to the County Office for the subsidy which would then be applied for. The only thing that would have to Ijc watched would be. the possibility of overlapping.
