SAVING THE BABIES

ANOTHER reminder to those interested in the work of the Plunket Society, and the fact that the annual meeting of this important organisation takes place in the Parish Hall on Wednesday, July 28th at 2.30 p.m. More than e:ver the Plunket movement requires the interest and support of the community for in these times of individual war effort, of Patriotic drives, and of countless emergency interests, the work of saving the babies, is all too often overlooked, or at best left to the willing few to carry it on. Whakatane citizens can be depended upon to give their fullest support to this vital service and we have no doubt but that Wednesday's meeting will be widely attended and that its outcome will be the appointment of a representative committee of active workers and also the recognition of those who have so unselfishly laboured in Plunket interests in the past.

Straying Stock In response to a complaint from the Whakatane Paper Mills that straying stock were becoming a nuisance on the company's loco line from Awakeri, the Whaikatane County Council deckled that the company be advised that examples were being made of owners of straying stock, but further that the matter of stock on the permanent way was one for the company with which to deal.

Remarkable Shooting A remarkable shooting performance was given by a Timaru Home Guardsman who registered 10 bulls with 10 shots rapid lire at 300 yards. The range officer, said, in congratulating the guardsman,, that it was only the second time in 40 years' experience that such a feat had been performed. Major J. A. Wallingford, M.C., N.Z.S.C., who was then champion marksman' of the British Empire, made a similar score at Trentham in 1919.
