WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT WHAKATANE The July meeting of the Whakatane Women's Institute was held im. the Methodist Hall on Tuesday last* Mrs Stewart presiding over a veryv large attendance of members. Several visitors were welcomed. At the* commencement members observed minute's silence to the memory ofi Mesdames Morgan and Hewitt andl extendedi sympathy tp Mesdames Dockray and Emery in their recentt bereavement. The business of the meeting wast quickly disposed of, three members, being appointed selectors for thet forthcoming Drama Festival—Mesdames Norman, Cole and Sutcliffe. Remits for the forthcoming ence were read to members, and it~, was decided to leave the matter 'o£~_ voting on the remits in the hands, of delegates. - The occasion being Servicemen's!Afternoon, photographs and souvenirs from overseas were Mrs Lysaght played popular pat-v riotic airs for the -community singing which were greatly enjoyed. A talk on the application of poultices was given by Mrs. Miller int.. her lucid manner. The president informed that Mrs Moran had recently packedl and dispatched 441 garments for the* Lady Galway Sewing Guild andt; stated that cut-out garments still awaited sewers.

Hospital pyjamas were also distributed by Mrs Crozier, ready for making up. A Mr Mairs of the Blind Institute*, gave a most instructive address oikv" the work of the Institute and. thanked the ladies for their continued support of this, worthy cause. AI sale of surplus packets, plu; dona-i tions, resulted, in the sum of £6 6s 2d being raised during the afternoon* A fascinating pastime was demonstrated by Mrs Sutcliffe', who dealt wiith the making of papier dolls heads. The hostesses served afternoon tea,... and the meeting closed with singing of "God, Defend New Zea-«* land."
