AWAKERI MEETING VARIKI) ACTIVITIES A meeting of the Awaken Patriotic Committee 1 was held in the s-chool-housee on '1 ucsday, (ith July, there being a fair attendance of members. Mr L. Luxton presided. Dinner Set Raffle: The seeretary reportcd, upon the progress of this raffle. After some discussion it was decided to send the set to Whakatane where Mr Thomas had agreed to allot space and. arrange the dis])lav. For this courtesy the committee is very grateful, it was decided that this raffle should be -drawn at a farewell funds dance to be held in the Awakeri Hall on Tuesday, 10th A ugust. Suit-length Raffle: This was drawn during the evening, the winning number being held by Mil's J. Baker of Awakeri. Donation from "Whakatane Golf Club: The: secretary was instructed to write a letter of thanks to the club for is generous donation of £5) lis. 2d, this being a third .share of the profit of a competition played last season. Vote of Thanks: A vote of thanks was- passed to the Awakeri school children for their good work in connection with the sports, sale ot dance tickets, preparation of the hall for functions, and patriotic knitting. Delegate's" Report: Mrs A. Martin reported upon her visit to the Paper Mills where she found a good spirit prevailing. As the residents there are already assisting the town area it Avas. considered that they should be included in the Whakatane zone. Payment to Centre: The secretary was instructed to> make a further payment of £200 to the centre. This sum will take Awakeri within casj* striking distance of its quota, a far happier state of affairs than existed at this stage last year.
