STRAYING STOCK
MANY OWNERS FINED OFFENDERS MAINLY MAORI/S That the police and Traffic Inspectors are doing their utmost to put an end to the dangerous! practice of allowing stock to wander at large on the roads was evidenced at the last sitting of the Whakatane Court when a large number of owners were substantially fined. Reuben Hori who pleaded guilty to being the. owner of: a bay mare found, by the police on the road at Paroa on May 25 was fined 20s and costs 235. Maara Himona, the owner of live head found at large at Matata on May 25 also pleaded guilty.
Sergeant Farrell .stated that in this instance one of the. animals had been responsible for a serious accident with a motor vehicle. Defendant complained of the poor state of the fences to the Native Department's property which he farmed. Fined 20s and costs 275. Tamati Kaiwhata was charged with permitting two draught mares, a l'oal, a hack and a pony to wander at large on the road at Paroa. The case was brought by the County Council's Traffic Inspector and Mr L. Buddie defended. Fined £2 and costs Ms (id. Waara Himona was further charged with allowing 18 Jersey cows and heifers to wander on the road at Matata. Fined £2 and costs 37s (id. Annie Mahia for permitting live head of cattle to strav at Matata on \ June 9 was fined 20s and costs 275.
