RACING NEWS

Sir,- —J, like many others in Whakatane have been curiously awaiting the. day and the judges decis- i ion in the much talked of and boomed race between Dalmatia, John Law and Home. Guard. Somehow the majority of the fans, even before the tapes were released, had the pre- 'Y monition that Dalmatia would romp home and beat the favourites John Law and Home Guard, and this is; exactly what happened. My summing up of the race is as follows:— Home Guard and. John Law were not ridden with much judgment. As the tapes went up and they left to ail uneven start, Prosecution on John Law appeared nervous and was contented; to sit too still, while Hope on Home Guartl drew the Avhip before going out of the straight. Swinging past the. four furlong John Law appeared to be fighting for his head and watching through my glasses even my inexperienced eye could sec. that if jockey Prosecution would let him go lie might easily have won the race. At this stage Hope on Home Guard was using spurs and whip in a frantic effort to be in at the death, while Counsel rider of Dalmatia was full of confidence. As they came into the straight Counsel on Dalmatia really got down to hard and skilful riding while Prosecution on John Law appeared exhausted and Hope on Home Guard still rode doggedly. With half u furlong to go Counsel lifted Dalmatia clean into the lead, put up a dense smoke screen, and Hashed past the finishing post a clear winner. Dalmatia collected the thick end-.of the purse, the only penalty being .the line of a few bob for giv- - ing John Law a couple of contemptuous kicks well before the start of.the race. Now the moral of this is: that I am a gee'gee in Home Guards stables and I eagerly train every time there is training but if naughty gee gees like Dalmatia are going to winlW. races without;-training and under • smoke screens.-th.cn I am going to try out his tactics".and believe me there are a lot of. other gee gees thinking of doing the. same. v Yours etc^, HOME GUARD MULE*
