SITTING IN WHAKATANE
FARMING CLAIMS RECOGNISED
"At the present time the Board considers that you will . be doing more to win the war by remaining on your father's farm, in spite of the fact that he is prepared to release you and carry on the farm with the help of your brother. Primary production to-day is one of our urgent problems and outweighs all other claims even including the Air Force." in this way Mr S. L. Patterson, Chairman of the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Ronr<l, answered the appeals lor Kenneth Clyde Melville and Charles Henry Melville, at the sitting of the Board last Tuesday. Both reservists in this instance, were appealed for by tlieir father G. Melville who employed them as sharemilkcris. Associated with Mr Patterson Ave.ru Messrs R. Cou". ier and FiVE. Sims, and the general tone of the.' findings throughout was a definite effort to presence and. maintain dairying and all kindred primary industries. Motor Mechanic's Case In the case of McLean Motors avlio appealed for the retention of the services of William R. McNaughton, mechanic, the chairman .stated that the Air Force required the urgent services of such men as reservist and the [Manpower Oft'iecr should he contacted to draft a lower graded
man in to take reservist's place. H. J. T. Litchwark who objected to joining up with any combatant group expressed his willingness to become a medical orderly in the Air Force, a position for which he had already volunteered. Appeal dismissed, reservist, not to be called unless lie be required to join a medical unit in the Air Force. Against Home Guard Service Appeals against Home Guard service were, entered by Henry Edward Missen, St. Elmo Charles Steele, Edgar Alfred Berryman. All three staged that they desired to remain in the E.P.S. > organisation where they were already serving. Appeals allowed. , Athalstane Phillip Smith (Te leko) who also appealed against Home Guard service on conscientious grounds said that he considered even' non-combatant .service assisted towards the extension of the Yl'ar. He described himself as assistant
manager of a timber mill employing 30 men. Appeal allowed. Remain on Farm In the appeal for Walter A. G. Hyland lodged by Mrs 1). C. Fisher which was withdrawn, the Board also slated that it considered reservist could do better for his country if he .sought another job on u farm. Adjourned for one month. Erie Mungo Douglas stated that lie was most keen to enter the Air Force but had been prevented when called at the. last minute by the action of his employer, who 'had entered a protest. He was a motor mechanic married, with three children. Appeal dismissed. Sine Die Adjournments Sine die adjournments were granted in the following instances: Reginald P. Marx (Edgecm mbe), Wjlfred L. J. Kelsen (Waimana), Herbert Sydney Grant. (Whakatane), MauYiee A. Grace and B. F. M. Grace (Tanealua), George P. Gallagher (Waimana), David B. Frankland (Tanealua), Joseph Arthur Dunstan (Tane.ii.tua), Geollrey Walter Crang (R.D. Whakatane). Pereival Cowan (Awakeri), Donald George Campbell (Otakiri), Doen Burgoyne-Thomas (Matata); Daniel James Brophy (Otakiri). In the appeal of N. F.
