SALARIES AND WAGES
SKILLED AND UNSKILLED
WORKERS
COUNTY CHAIRMAN'S VIEIWS
In the course of his annual > re- ' port last week to the Whakatane County Council the chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, made' some interesting comments on the question of salaries and wages and the position of the trained man which he said was fast being overtaken by workers; who had had no training. "You will notice gentlemen," he said, "that the between salary and wages has been cut so fine, that to-day there is very little difference between the returns to unskilled labour and those received by men trained in office and administrative work. This may have very bad repercussions 6n the county as a whole in years to come. Mistakes, costing hundreds of pounds may be made by men who have not the ability to hold the positions they occupy. I am glad to say that the council has never held these views and while there is little we can do about it it is probably worth our while to say something while we can."
