VICE REGAL VISIT

THE MAYOR COMPLIMENTED

SIGNAL HONOUR FOR TOWN

The fact that Whakatane was favoured with the presence of the ViceRegal parly on and off lor the best part of ten days and that Their Excellencies officially and informallv presented a never-failing front of courtesy and charm to all with whom they came, in contact has given many of us a feeling of warmest regard for Sir Cyril and Lady Ncwall, not by virtue of their imperial appointment, but as plain unpretentious folk as we ourselves.

Touching on the subject of Their Excellencies visit at the last meeting of the Borough Council, the Mayor expressed his thanks to all those who had assisted him in the performance of his duties of office, mentioning in particular the Town Clerk (Mr D. V. Saunders), and the Traffic Inspector (Mr J. Delves). The arrangements, lie said, went like clockwork and there was not the slightest hitch anywhere.

Cr Sullivan said lie would like to compliment His Worship and the Mayoress: on the very capable and able manner in which they had carI'ied out their part of the ceremony. No one could have done it better or~'with greater dignity.

"If that is how my part appeared," rejoined Mr Barry, "it was only because it was made so easiy '.by the charming jjcrsonalities of of our two distinguished guests."

Particular reference was made by the Mayor to the manner in which Mrw*nd Mrs N. Bremner of the Commercial Hotel exerted themselves in order to make Their Excellencies at home.

The difficult task of catering for

what was more or less a civic reception was carried out by Mr and Mrs BremiTer and their staff with ail efficiency and thoroughness which left nothing to be desired.
