QUESTION OF DRAUGHTS
Discussing the question of abating draughts in the main corridor at the hospital, very nearly developed a young tornado at the meeting of the Whakatane Hospital Board' yes'
terday,
Mr C. H. McCready at the previous meeting had introduced the matter and suggested that something should be done to overcome? the nuisance. The x*esult was a plan and, estimate i'rom a local buiider for a double set of doors to cost
£55 5s
"They can tliink again," said Mr McCready. '"If we can't overcome a draught or two without spending all this money there's something
wrong,"
The chairman, Mr L. Buddie, asked Mr McCready to indicate his o>vn idea by a rough sketch.
Mr McCready: No, you've got your experts to do that. I only suggested a bit of a breakwind witli a slid-, ing door.
The Chs'.rman: Weil yrr»* impossible!
Mr McCready: Its ' aken this board 40 years, to deckle that Us necesJ t sary at any rate., that's how goafd it is and I'm here to see that we pay reasonable costs for the things we get. The Chairman: You mustn't assume that the board, is advocating the expenditure of £53. Mr McCready: -No you want to spend £55,000. That's what you want to do. Here Mrs Haultain 'objected' strenuously. We don't want tllese bickerings, she said. Our time is too precious to be wasted like this. Let's get on with the business for Heaven's sake! Mr McCready: Get on with the business alright. The . ratepayers will show you how to get on with it before they've finished! The Chairman: Order, keep to the point. Mr McCready: I've said what I've got to say. The chairman then said that he did -not favour the spending of £55 but had brought along a door-gov-ernor which automatically closed the door firmly after it had been opened, He suggested that it would answer the purpose. The device was adopted by the Board and all further comment ceased. • . - l -
