COUNTY REPRESENTATION
ZONE SYSTEM ADVOCATED WHAKATANE SCHEME ENDORSED The .scheme suggested by the Whakatane County Council that members to the executive of the New Zealand Counties Association, should be elected b3 r means of a zone system whereby each could represent the ratepayers within a given area has apparently met with a very favourable reception elsewhere. At. the meeting of the council last Tuesday the County Clerk reported that replies had. so far been received from 38 county councils. Of these, 17 supported the council's proposals; 10 recommended that the. matter be dealt with at the forthcoming conference; in live eases the council's letter was either received or no action was taken and five indicated that they were satisfied with the present system. In addition, the Dannevirke County Council stated that the Danncvirke County Council appreciates the necessity for some al-. teration and had referred the coun' cil's letter to the Joint Hawke's Bay Counties' conference to be held next month. The council has resolved to take the matter further by forming it into a remit for consideration at the forthcoming Counties' Confer' encc.
