POPULAR SOCIAL EVENING

GAY NJGHT IN CALEDONIAN

HALL

The Whakatane Returned Services Association held its popular dance in the Caledonian Hall last Wednesday evening and the event proved to be fully up to all expectatious.

The large crowd filled the hall to capacity and a happy social spirit prevailed throughout. The hall had been tastefully decorated and the dance arrangements left nothing to be desired.

Music was supplied by the Gaiety J3oys orchestra and a full programs** me of modern and old-time steps was warmly appreciated. Mr T. Atkinson made a capablc M.C. Supper was efficiently catered for and served by members of the ladies committee who arc to be complimented on their work and the capablc manner in which they carried it out. The drawing of the winner of the cantecn of cutlery which has been the subject of a district wide raffle v?as carried out by six young ladies, the. lucky winner being 5850 (Mrs E. Edwards, of Te Telco). Immediately after the disposal of the cutlcry, Mr Henderson was called on in the absence of His: Worship the Mayor to farewell Gunner Jessup. Mr Henderson in a very appropriate speech wished Gunner Jessup the very best df luck anil a safe return to his home. Mr Runciman, president of the R.S.A., also extended the best wishes of the old Diggers. Mrs Norman then made a presentation on behalf of the Ladies Farewell Committee. Winners of. the novelty danccs were Ist Monte Carlo, Mr and Mrs Higham; 2nd, Monte Carlo, L. A. G. Ward and Miss Price; Lucky Spot Gay Gordons, Mr Housliam and partner. Dancing continued till 1 a.m. i when the singing of 'Auld Lang Syne' completed a most successful and. enjoyable evening.
