SPORTS AT AWAKERI
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL DAY CROWD IN HOLIDAY MOOD SUBSTANTIAL SUM RAISED The Awakeri Sports, the fifth meeting of its kind held in this district within, the past two months for the purpose of raising Patriotic funds took place last Saturday in perfect weaher and was attended l by a record crowd for the district. The sports embraced the usual '■horse, athletic and novelty events and were. a credit to all concerned Once again the committee was indebted to a local resident for th 4* use of the grounds and to Mr T. ■H. Howell must go the fhanks, of the community for the splendid sportsi area in which the meeting 'took place. Attractive Horse Section The horse events at Awakeri were 'probably more outstanding than at any of the other sports hitherto. The entries were particularly strong "and the standard was once again uniformly high. Old 'Dobbin' who in pre-war days was in danger of Jading out of the picture altogether <ca;n safely be said to be now coming into his own. , j The twenty-two mounted events -attracted remarkable entries. The most exciting were, of course the sprints which were all started from -good fields. The finishes too were uniformly exciting and we. have not "heard cheering like that accorded the winners for a long time. The draught horse derby, was another popular event and created much amusement. The only acci•dent of any consequence occurred ■when Mr T. Summerhayes of Ponga kawa was thrown from his horse and badly winded. He was treated toy a section from the. Home Guard ."Medical Corps and appeared to be '.little the worse. The jiunior horse .section which -was also extremely popular catered for a further eight events all of -which saw good fields of starters -and keen competition. Athletics The innovation of school trophies presented through the courtesy of ..Mr S. W. Burstall,. and competed for, for the first time stimulated some splendid school athletics. The relay races were particularly keen ■and whipped the onlookers up to a high pitch of excitement. In the adult scction the entries though somewhat limited provided ■excellent, competition. The sprints were, perhaps the pick of the programme from the spectators point -of view but we must mention the high jump whith found surprisingly good exponents. Highland Section The National Dancing Section was carried out once more under the auspices of the Whakatane Cale- • donian Society and though it failed to draw the same number of entries it lias in other centres was nevertheless an attractive and pleasing ■ centre of interest for a large crowd. The sports in themselves w r ere a •direct tribute to those residents *11' the district who formed the com--1 mittee and we have to congratulate Mr T. F. Kerr, the hardworking and efficient secretary, and all mem"bers, of his executive on the splendid results they achieved.
