OBITUARY

MR E. S. BAXTER

The death occurred on Wednesday last (April 20£h) of Mr Evan Sutherland Baxter, elder son of Mr and Mrs W. J. Baxter, of Wliakatane. The late Mr Baxter who leaves a wife and ten young children died suddenly after a brief illness and his passing came as a great shock to his. many friends em- ~J ployccs of the Wliakatane Paper 1 Mills where he had worked, since « the inception of the plant. Born in Cupars Fife, Scotland, 42 years ago, he came to this country with his parents and was educated at the Thames School of Mines. He matriculated there and.showed great scholastic promise. On completing his education he joined the staff of ' an Insurance Company in Auckland but later joined his parents who had* shifted to Wliakatane and became; a clerk in the Freezing Works at Piripai. When that company went out of business lie became bookkeeper for Kirk and Carter, butch"ers of Wliakatane and also took an f active part in organising the political campaign for Mr W. Sullivan in 1938. Up till the time of hist death lie was secretary of the local' Jfl branch of the Paper Workers Union r He will be missed by many friends who will join in extending the greatest" sympathy to his widow and ® young family. ' /
