Cr McC READY'S
ATTITUDE
An intimation that he intended 1 challenging the chairman to a public debate on the question of the proposal Hospital loan of £45 ; ,000 for the benefit of the Borough ratepayers, was given by Cr C. H. McCready at the laslt meeting of the Whakatane County Council.
Cr McCready maintained that the Borough ratepayers on the whole had not been given the opportunity of expressing an opinion on this important question and that by the attitude ot the Borough Council in supporting the loan, they were being made the objects of guowing feeling in the county.
"We don't want to raise the
question of town versus country,'* said Cr McCready, "but feeling against the Borough is running very high and I know for a fact that certain people are talking a boycott. Leading men in the town are amazed at the attitude of the Borough Council and state that it had) had no- authority to support such a project before allowing the ratepayers to express' an opinion. "I am going to challenge the chairman of the Hospital Board to a publilc debate on hospital matters," continued Cr McCready. "I will take the whole question on to the public platform and if he won't accept the challenge then I'm going to handle the meeting myself."
