MAORI OFFENDERS
THEFTS IN WHAKATANE BICYCLE AND SUITCASE i Before Messrs; G. Brabant and JU King, J.lVs, in the Whakatane Courts last Tuesday two cases against local Maoris l'or theft were heard a'ndk. resulted in Jimmie Hika and Nepia Mate each Joeing sentenced to 'a month's imprisonment. Regarding Hika, Sergeant Farrell said that at Te Tcko last July h© had stolen, a bicycle the property of John Bunyan and had retained possession of it until comparatively recently when it. had been traced by the police- Its value was £10. Accused pleaded, guilty and was sentenced as above. Nepia Mate, was charged with stealing a suitcase from a service bus in Whakatane on the 10th inst. Police evidence showed that accus- . ed had. pushed the case under some* decking on the waterfront wheTeit was discovered by Constable Thomassen, who kept watch untib Mate returned later in the evening to collect it. Accused also pleaded: guilty and will join his mate in his four weeks ' sojourn in the cells. | l
