IN GERMANY

LETTER FROM P.O.W. CAMP LOCAL OFFICER'S OBSERVATIONS }Vriting from P.O.W. camp Ofiag IX A/H Germany a Whakatane Major has the following; interesting observations to make: "T see by the German papers you have large number of U.S.A. troops in New Zealand. I .sincerely hope if they are to see fighting they wfill have to leave New Zealand to get it. We have seen no reference to the New Zealand Division .since Rommel said, they were against him in Egypt I suppose they are still there. Rommel referred to them as the "Headhunters" ancl I hope their casualties are not too heaA'y. Y(ou have not told me if the large deposits of phosphates found in Southland have solved your fertilising problem. The German papers said it was a large deposit. Ij have beeu able to purchase a nice Rolex sports watch from Switzerland and have had it engraved but will have to wait and deliver it myself. My New Zealand peaked hat Avhich came in my last parcel from you is the env.v of all New Zealandcrs here. Most of the officers here arc Dunkirk men and have not seen our peaked hats. I am happy to have my Hauraki badges too. Winter is truly here and everything is. white. Looks as if we will have white Christmas onccv again. I think the Japs show better taste in wanting Australia and New Zealand, than the Germans in wanting more of Europe. Still this country has its compensations as there is 11 hours of darkness when one can't see the snow."
