A THOUSAND TONS OF VEGETABLES
REFERRED to by the Auckland Supply Authority, simply as the Te Teko Scheme, the thirty acres of cultivated land in the vicinity of that township would probably amaze the average resident in this district by its wonderful productivity, in the shape of vegetables for the military camp authorities in many parts of the province. In the first instance it was estimated that some fifteen tons would be required per month from the property. However this figure has been more than doubled in order to meet the extraordinary demand from the camps, until since. Christmas the largest monthly figurfe has been no less than 54 tons. Think of it, solid vegetables, carrots, onions, greens all despatched regularly from a comparative ninpoint of the green plains that sweep in rich pastures around the eastern arc of the Bay of Plenty. In itself it is a wonderful advertisement for the fertility of the Rangitaiki soil and the remarkable growth which is possible under the kindly climatic conditions which obain. The demand! next season has intensified and it will interest the housewives of this town to reflect when they push a few onions in their shopping baskets, that a few miles distant, at Te Teko, a farm of 50 acres will be supplying the military camps with vegetables to the tune of 80 ton per month —■ a mere 1000 tons over the year.
