SMART AUXILIARY UNIT
Those who have not had the pleasure of seeing a combined parade of members of the Whakatane Fire Brigade and the war-time emergency body known as the Auxiliary .Brigade, would l>e surprised at the strength of the combined organisation no less than its efficiency and smart nessC|n the occasion of the annual meeting of the Whakatane Fire Board last Tuesday evening, advantage was taken of the presence of Auckland members to stage an inspection of both personnel and plant. The men who were drawn up in three ranks inside the station, were under Superintendent Stewart, and made- a particularly smart impression. Complimentary references to the manner in which the men. had main--tained their efficiency were made by Board members. The Insurance Company members in particular expressing the warmest praise. "I'm not satisfied with the apartments for this brigade,'' said Mr R. Wilson, "and 1 can tell you that I hope I will be instrumental in the erection of a decent station with social and living amenities for the benefit of the brigadesmen. The chairman, Mr S. Shapley, said that the town was proud of its lirefighting organisation and he would like to add. his own personal co-.nJ gratulations on the high standard it had maintained throughout the difficult, war period. Mr J. Creeke said, he had inspect* ed many brigades in his time but considered that for a voluntary organisation Whakatane was well up the list. He too hoped to see a new fire station in the. town. Mr F. B. Cutler added his compliments.
