THE WHAKATANE CLUB OPENING DAY The Whakatane Golf Club opened its 1943 season last Saturday in perfeet weather. The 1 course was in . splendid condition in spite of the dry weather. The club's water reticulation t.o the greens made up for the lack of rain and kept these in good, and green growth. The fairways, however, showed the effect of the dry spell. In order to save the turf all players were advised to place in the fairway till further notice. A mixed foursomes was played . "over nine holes, after the appropriate speech of welcome to all! ankj intending members, and the usual opening long drive by the president, Mr L. Luxton. He mentioned that now conditions in the Middle East have improved, and in the midst of all our various Avar efforts, we must have some form recreation and. relaxation, and the club's golf course at Paroa will supply that need. He also welcomed as a. visitor the President of the Whan ngarei Golf Club, Mr Reynolds and Mesdames Adams and Franklin.! sMrs Franklin partnered with Peter Campbell, brought in the splendid card J of 40 gross for the second half of the course. Included, amongst that list also were Miss McCallum of New Plymouth, Miss Coulan and M. Pirini. •Thirteen fours faced the. starting tape, to follow up the President's long drive. The best cards being as follows: — Mrs Franklin and P. Campbell 40—7—33 (2nd half); Mrs Win-» stone and Spence 47—9—38' (Ist half); Miss Tate and Anderson 48— 10 —38 (Ist half); Miss Lenz and Reynolds 49 —11—38 (Ist half). Saturday's Match There, will be a 4-ball bcstyball Bogey competitions partner, being, arranged at the clubhouse. Rehandicapping At a later date a series of medal rounds will be played in order to re-, handicap all players. LADIES GOLF ANNUAL MEETING HELD The annual general meeting of . the. Whakatane Ladies' Golf Club was held at the Clubhouse on April • 10 when there was a good attendance of .members. Mrs Winstone presided. jA The minutes of the previous nual general meeting were read and confirmed. Mrs Otley read the treasurer's report. The "election of officers resulted as follows:—• President: Mrs Spence. Captain: Mrs Winstone. . t Vice-captain: Mrs Dawson. Secretary: Miss V. Carter. Committee: Mrs Steel, Mrs Berg, Mrs Otley, Mrs Sloane, Mrs aldson, Mrs Mussett, Miss Tait MiSs Graham. A special vote of thanks was C3fr tended to the. retiring secretary, Mr.s Spence, who has. so capably carried out her duties for several years. Votes of thanks were also mov£d to the retiring president, the retir-t ing club captain, to the Beacon and to the chair. These were all carried unanimously. Transport The question of transport was discussed and it was jlecided that those who had no means of conveyance should hand their names to the see* i retary or ring 'phone No. 40. There being no further business . to discuss the meeting- was then closed.
