OBITUARY

THE HON: P. K. PAIKEA.

The death occurred at Wanganui* last Tuesday of the Hon. p. K. Pai-r ke.a, who represented the native race on the Executive Council. Mr Paikea, avlio was in his 4.9 th year, was member for the Northern Maori electorate. Mr Paikea lel't Wellington late on Friday afternoon to visit Mr H. T. Ratana, M.P. for Western Maoris who is in hospital at. Patea, and on his Avay back to Ratana Pa on Sa£-» urday hecamc ill and was taken to a private hospital in Wanganui. It was not thought at the time; that his" condition was' such as to give concern, but a haemorrhage developed and lie died at 2 o'clock last' Tuesday morning. The Hon. Para ire Karaka Paikea, entered Parliament as a Labour Ro> preventative of the Northern Maori electorate. He had stood for the seat three, times, previous to then. He was born at Otamatca, cn June 1, 1894. He was educated at St. Stephen's Native; College (190709) Wesley, Training College (191015<), where he was dux in 1914. He won a scholarship at the Tanoa Native School and lor ten yeairs* from 1915 was a Minister in the Methodist Church. * ~ £ In 1925 he became private secretary to Mr T. W. Ratana, Member for Western Maori, and, became chief executive officer of the; Movement in 1926. In the 1928, 1931 and 1935 elections, the late Mr Paikea contested the Northern Maori seat for the Ratana Movement, and in each case was defeated by Mr T. Henare, the National candidate 1 . In the 1938 elections, Mr Paikea won the seat by a majority of 2,011 votes over Mr Henare. In 1936 he became Secretary of the Maori Advisory Council of New Zealand" Labour Party with headquarters established in Wellington. Following his election to Parliament Mr Paikea was appointed Minister in Charge of the Maori Wair Effort in, 1941, a position he held uj> to- the time of his death. He - is a descendant of Paikea ta Kekeua, a chief of the NgatiWhtaua tribe. He, leaves a widotv, Mrs 11. Paikea, one son and ona daughter.
