WAIMANA SUCCESSFUL LOCALS DEFEATED IN FINAL GAME £ ? Eh the final game of the season between Waimana and WhalSataiie, Waimana was successful in defeating Whakatane by 45 runs in a very exciting match. A great deal of interest was shown in the game; anjcl the spectators were held in suspense until 5.40, when Axtens hit the winning run for Waimana. Whakatane won the toss and elected to bat, and after two hours play scored 145. Oswald played a solid innings for 13 runs, being partnered by McKenzie, who scored 23, tir* ed the bowlers: somewhat. When Rivett joined Oswald the score was 37. After surviving three chances Rivett went on in good style and was poined by Smart when the score was 72. Thisi partnership produced 30 runs when Rivett was cdught. by Miller on the boundary with a half century to his credjit. Smart and Hunt carried the score tp 130' when the former was caught for 18 and Hunt went shortly afterwards with 19 to his credit. The innings closed soon after with a t'qtal; of 145 runs. Waimana's first innings proved a day for the bowlers and. K. Bell with 23 was the only batsman to show good form. R. Axtens and D:. Boynton, however, made a good eighth wicket stand, scoring 18 and 19 respectively. Whakatane's second \nnings proved disastrous for the home side and after the first two wickets had fallen with Spring 19 and Rigdon 13 it was little more than a pro* cession, the whole team being out for 49 runs. This left Waimana 100 runs to get in their second innings and it looked as though Whakatane were going to w r in when the visitors were 4 down for 39, but solid play by Axtens, who was partnered by Mitchell,, carried the day for the victors, and after many singles the Waimana batsmen passed Whakatane's score, with two wickets in hand. Axtens scored a solid 33 and Mitchell -27. Thanks are due to the Whakatane lady supporters for producing' a delightful afternoon tea.
