CRICKET

WIN FOR MARRIED MEN! On Sunday last the local cricket club fielded teams representing the married and single men. Despite the prominence 'of youth in today's sport the married veterans proved too cool and experienced for the si'ngle men and defeated the lattolr by 41 runs in a two • i'nriji-nga ■ match. The married men were not extended at any time however, and did not bat a full eleven in either innings. , The single men batted first and compiled 93 runs (Hancock 22, Beaumont 15, Dewhurst 11 and J. Rivett 15). At no time did the batsmen look like making a stand and Spring and Rigdon shared the wickets be-< tween them. The married men knocked up 155 for the loss of six wickets (Spring 31, Rigdon 42, Jeffares 15, Oswald 31, Whitehead 23 being the chief scorers). Most of the single men had a try with the ball and McKenzie and J. Rivett shared the honours. In the sccond innings for the losers J. Rivett made a stand with the bat. and scored 66 whilst McKcnzie contributed 2S. Hancock 21, Johns 15 and B. Riveftt 13 runs. Spring and Rigdon again shared the wickets. The veterans sccond innings proved bright and breezy with Spring reaching a half century and. Oswald and Rigdon retiring with *12 and 23 runs resyeclively. Particular interest is, being shown, liowdver, in the approaching game next Sunday, when Waimana will journey to Whakatane to play the final game of the season between the now tried teams. Eeach has two wins to their credit and interest will be running high to see who will decide the issue. The ground is in first-class order and with the pleasant overhead conditions prevailing it is expected that the' cricket will be of a high standard.
