Sports Advts on Page 8 The attention of readers is. drawn; to the detailed advertisements on page 8 of this issue setting out the full programme of the forthcoming Tancatua and Awakeri sports meetings. « Dry Spell Broken, Last night's rain amounted to .17 inches in Whakatane, the greatest for over live weeks. With heavy rain threatening it is obvious that the district is now about to cxperlience the. long awaited wet period j which will usher in the autumn, j £40 Already in Hand Since the Taneatua sports meeting has been mooted, by the local Patriotic Committee it is reported that the sum of £40 has: already been subscribed as prize money. These donations spontaneously subscribed have given the meeting a wonderful 'kick' along though more will still be acceptable. Ratepayers' Request Refused The Whakatane. County Council with Cr McCready dissenting, decided at its last meeting to reject Mr G. Ivirkbridc's request for a perusal of all the correspondence connected with his road. The. council's stand was based upon the grounds that in view of a court action which the writer contemplated bringing against the Council in the near future such action might adversely affect the case. Couinity Office Staff h Like, most other organisations, the County Council is having its, own problems with regard to its office Staff. At the last meeting the clerk (Mr C. G. Lucas) reported three resignations and the subsequent appointment of Misses E. Carling and E. Eruera as assistants. Commenting on the latter appointment, the chairman Mr J. L. Burnett, said that he was pleased to see a Maori junior engaged and understood from Mr Lucas that she was giving very satisfactory service. He hoped that she would not be the last to join the inside staff as there was no reason why Maori girls could not give the same efficient service as Pakelias. Evening a Scor« Just to make Japanese searchlight men and A.A. gunners "hopping mad," a young American pilot, over Rabaul one. night threw overboard a roll of toilet paper.. The paper streamed out. in the glare of the searchlights and more A.A. guns went into operation. Then tlie pilot Morsed insultng messages to Emperor Hirioliito with his landing lights. His crew caught the idea and threw down empty bottles. He explained that a little earlier he had been kept up all night by a wandering Japanese pilot and to even the score he had flown his machine over Rabaul from midnight until dawn.
