WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT EDGECUMBE.

The annual meeting and monthly meeting combined of the Edgecumbe Women's Institute was held on Tuesday, March 16. Mrs Hodson presided over a good attendance of members. Business for the monthly meeting was dealt with, first. Delegates were nominated for the April Conucil meeting and a remit for that meeting Avas proposed by Mrs Le Lievre "That the Railway Department bo approached regarding reduced fares for children travelling to and from boarding school." This was seconded by Mrs Burgess, and carried. Mrs Cavc.rhii'l was nominated as Federation President and. Mrs Le Lievre and Mrs Learning for the Executive Committee. A vote Avas taken on the matter of holding Dominion Conference, in

tAvo parts, one in each island, and proved Edgecumbe W.I. in favour of the suggestion. Mrs Hodson was elected as delegate to the Conference. This concluded the business for the monthly meeting. Annual Meeting The annual meeting Avas opened with the singing of the Ode to Friendship and Mrs Withy, Voluntary Organiser, read the Aspirations. The annual report read by the secretary showed a most, satisfactory year's AA r orlc Avith varied programme to cater for all tastes. A large amount, of knitting has been done for merchant seamen. In moving the adoption of the report Mrs Hodson, president, thanked the committee and members for help and co-operation during the year. Mrs Learning in seconding the adoption of the annual report, congratulated the. president and committee on the excellent programme they had provided and the harmony and. good felloAVship Avhicli had prevailed throughout, the year. Election of Officers The election of olficers for the ensuing term then took place and j resulted as 1'oIIoavs: President, Mrs Hodson; . committee, Mrs Andersen. Mrs Fowell, Mrs List, Miss Le Lie a* re Mrs Malpas, Mrs Martin. Mrs Roberts, Mrs Russell and Mrs Spiers. A bouquet was presented, to Mrs Bnrgess, retiring secretary. Points prizes, for, the year's competitions were awarded as follows: Flower competition, Mrs Russell and Mrs Wilson equal, 1; Mrs List 2. Talent competition, Mrs List 1; Mrs Burgess 2. The entertainment section of the programme Avas very enjoyable. Two songs; AA'erc sung by Miss Rich accompanied by Mrs Brist.on.-A pianoforte solo Avas given by Mrs Good-. Avin. This Avas heartily applauded and. Mrs Goodwin played a second number. A Avail competition was Avon by Mrs FlaA'cl. ] Mrs BristoAV, infant mistress of the Edgecumbe School, gave a brief talk on the requirements of the very young children at school and | exhibited some of the articles modelled by them. Mrs Withy, Voluntary Organiser for the Eastern Bay of Plenty,, then spoke. She complimented the president and members on the. smoot.li running of the annual meeting and the businesslike manner in which it had been conducted. She said it always gave her great pleasure, to visit Eklgccumbe W.I. and emphasised the need for not relaxing in the matter of gardening" and to grow flowers for beauty as well as vegetables.! She Avas. accorded a hearty A r ote of thanks. Mrs; Learning was heartily applauded for her effort in the Talent competition for Patriotic funds, she having made £1 10s during the year from Is., The competitions for the day Avere Avon as folloAvs: Flower Mrs Learning 1; Mrs Hodson 2; Mrs List 3. Plum sauce, Mrs .Tersperson 1; Mrs Burgess 2; Mrs Learning 3. Article from flour bag, Miss Le Lievre 1: Mrs List 2; Mrs Malpas 3. The articles were a dainty blue dress and. pants; a boy's shirt and pants and a pretty embroidered baby's frock. These and all other entries in this competition were given to the local Red Cross. A dainty afternoon tea "was served by the committee, after which the singing of the National Anthem brought a pleasant afternoon to a close.
