TO THE GERMANS
BROADCAST FROM MOSCOW PREDICTS NAZI DOWNFALL In a broadcast from Moscow to the German people, Wilhelm Pieck, a member of the former German Reichstag, lias* some pertinent things to say. Informing them that, tlie worst is still to come, Wilhelm Pieclv says:— Feliow countrymen, you have oncc more heard a speech by Hitler. What had this man to tell you after more than three, years of Avar, and after 15 months of war against tlie Soviet. Union? Did he give you an answer to the all-important question which occupies all of you, namely, when will this terrible war, this senseless annihilation of millions of Germans, come to an end? Did he still spealc, as lie did a year ago, of imminent victory and of 'an approaching end to the Avar? Nothing of the kind. His , speech was an involuntary admission of the collapse of his war plans, a disclosure of the unheard-of. deception which lie practised against our peojjfle for a whole year, by his fa%c promises of a speedy, victorious end to the 1 war. Hitler would not be Hitler, of course, if lie did not attempt to conceal hard facts by lying phrases and, coarse, abuse of liis adversaries. You heard what, this man stated: that he could not end tlie war, but only drag it out, and that his ad-> versaries would carry on hostilities as long as they had power to do so. Do you realise what this means;? Hitler actually admitted that he is not able to beat bis enemies, that the decision does not lie with hhn, but with his enemies.. He even emphasised this by saying: "What we ; can do to beat them wc will do." ! Truth One Year Later What, wc can do! That's the difficult}'. Hitler knows that his '"can" is approaching its end, while the "can'' of his adversaries is growing in power. Remember the speech which the same man made a yea* ago, on October 3, at the same place, the Berlin Sports Palace. Then lie announced that the enemy on the eastern front had already been knocked out and would never rise again. The Nazi press could not find big enough letters to proclaim the great victory. But in reality the situation of the German army was such that in his speech before the so-called Reichstag on April 26 Hitler had to admit that Germany had cscaped disaster only by the skin of her tee tii. In the winter did you read in tlip reports of tin? Supreme Command, which, according to Hitler contain only the truth, anything about the disastrous situation of the Germany armj T ? No. You were given news only of "successes," just as to-day. Now our people are in the fourtili y'eta of the war, and the German army faces a second Russian winter, i What new immeasurable suffering and grief are in store, for you? Hitler wants to continue this hopeless war until our people have reached the end of their strength,, until the German army has been destroyed, until all our towns are. in ruins, until Germany itself becomes a-the-atre of war. while hunger ravages us. . My German fellow-countrymen! Only a criminal, an enemy of our people,, could act in this way. Hitler lies when lie. saj's that the worst is over. The worst is still before us,' unless Ave at last make up our minds to overthrow Hitler and hi* gang of war criminals and to take the fate of our nation in our own hands./ It is Hitler's lie that the war was forced on the. Germans, and that his adversaries wish to destroy our people. It is Hitler who has brought about this war, who commits the most unbelievable cruelties against the nations. His defeat will most certain! j t be his doom. Form Armedi Groups But the. German people, if tliejoverthrow this gang of criminals, can end this war any day and obtain a just peace. Nobody wants to harm the German people, but they must no longer tolerate Hitler's crimes. Our country is facing a grave crisis: which in the coming winter may become a terrible catastrophe. No time is to be lost if this catas-i trophe is to be prevented. AIV opponents of Hitler and his war must combine and fight to end the war by overthrowing Hitler. Men and women at home and the soldiers at the front must seize thcinitiative, organise and lead the
struggle. By sabotaging all Hitler's Avar measures, by forming armed groups against the terror Gestapo and S.S.. bandits, by strikes and demonstrations. the struggle Avill develop into a universal people's rising for the overthrow of the Hitler gang. Onh~ thus can be end be put to the Avar and to Hitler's barbarism. Onlj' thus can Ave create a neAv, free Germany.
