SUCCESSFUL SPORTS MEETING ■M ~ The sports meeting held in the iWaimana Domain last Saturdaj 7- , was a crowning success. The weather was perfect, and visitors and competitors were present, from all * the surrounding districts, estimated ' attendance being 2000. Mir W. Sullivan, M.P., and Mrs. Sullivan were present from Whakatane. The Pipe * Band and the Boys Band from W 7 haIcatanc were also at the meeting, their presence and music being much appreciated., their attendance being one of the main attractions of the day. The approximate, takings were between £400' and £500, the profits going to the Waimana Patrioticquota. The Patriotic Gommittee wish to thank the judges for their able assistance, Mrs James, Opotiki, Mr F. Pile,, Opotiki and Mr D. H. Mackay, Auckland, also the. stewards and helpers who. arranged the
events. Thanks go to Mr R. Canning, Mr Prince and Mr Tindal for 1 doing the announcing of events; etc. which was a great , help, and to Mr Kings,ley-Smith for arranging the dancing, and, to Mr Carling and as- J sistants for controlling the traffic. . Several members of the Waimana branch of the St. John's Nursing _ Division were on duty for the day, ! Vbut the function was void of aoci- • dents. The parade which was led by tlie Pipe Band was well worth see-' ; ing. The entries for the chopping events were over twenty, the chopping exhibition being very good. Some sixty horses took part in the horse events, the judge stating it was the largest number he had seen at a country sports meeting. The athletic events drew ; large entries and were keenly contested. The Maori liangi arranged by Mrs Jack Boynton proved most popular and profitable. The Mock Court caused a. good deal of merr'H
merit the Crown Prosecutor being Mr T. A. Hamerton, Clerk of oCurt ; Mr W. Addison, Police, Mr L. Duckcr and Mr J. Wardlaw, all those arrests ed were -docile and afraid of resisting the makeshift (cops). The greasy „ pig did not have a very long run, it being caught by Mr Don Addison.
