SEASON NOW COMPLETED COUNTY ACTIVITIES Bn a statement, to the ; Whakat&ne County Council last Tuesday tii6 Clerk, Mr C. G. Lucas, reported that expenditure 1 of the: ragwort grant, in period 12/10/43 to and including 12/3/43 was:— Wages £2423 3 10 Freight, cartage 375 1 2 Insurance 44 ,14 5 Total ' * £2842 19 5 Recoveries from the department amounted to £1,012 18s lOd and claims had been lodged witli the department for £1830 0s 7d. Further details were available from the engineer's report which showed the work done over the past four weeks on Crown and unindividualised native lands as under:— Manhours Wages Acres Cut To date 153333 £2068 10819 Ist week 8G0 ; 107 590 2nd week 720 • 96 185 3rd week 744 99 690 4th week 384 5i 600 17981 £2423 12834, Since last report"the Pahou. Pekatahi, Paper Mills and Awakeri areas had been gone over for the third time, it being found in the interim that rapid growth of the weed had ' again taken place. Additional cutting was also carried out at the Soda Springs, Kawerau, Braemar and Waimana areas. From Edgecumbeto Tc Teko,, both sides of the river were also done the third time. The results of the year's working had not been entirely satisfactory, the two main factors being the. inability to procure sodium and the standard of labour available I'cr tht» | work.
