LOCAL BRANCH MEETING * — 4 VARIED ACTIVITY The monthly meeting of the Wlia* katane branch of the N.Z. Red Cross Society took place in the Borough Council Chambers on the 9th March at 2 p.m. Mrs Sullivan was in the chair. For the Sewing Committee Mrs Ramson reported that of the 42 pairs of pyjamas sent down by the Auckland Joint Council 21 pairs had been taken by the Institute, and others had been distributed. Mrs Pyne was cutting out the dressing gown material received. Knitting Circle—Mrs Timbs said there was. a lot of wool on hand from Patriotic, but supplies' from the Joint Council had not yet come in. Not. very much wool was being given out just now, Mrs E. Armstrong said the Entertainments Committee had « nothing on hand at the moment. They had voted their share of the takings of. the United Nations Ball to Red ' Cross funds, and a cheque would bet forwarded shortly. Mrs James, reported that the org.- . ' anisation of streets in the Borough to take over the shop Avas progress? ing satisfactorily,, she read out. a list of the sums taken by various streets. Mrs Prideaux, Lady Superintendent of the Voluntary Aid Detachment, said the V.A.'s were holding regular fortnightly meetings. Mrs Sullivan had presented, certificates to the junior members at a function held at Mrs Prideaux's house recently.. Mrs Jarrett had gone to the North Island Voluntary Aid Committee's meeting in Palmerston North as delegate. 1 , Junior Red. Cross —Mrs Winstone j reported she had seen Mr Hubbard ' Headmaster of the Whakatane School re enlarging J.R.C. work, and he was prepared to give every assistance. She had also approached, the Convent re-establishing a Circle, and. was hopeful that this would be done. Moved by Mrs Sullivan that the committee provide the Whakatane School. Infant School and- Convent with First Aid kits. Seconded by Mrs Winstone and carried. Mrs Shapley reported- for the Comforts Committee that they' had packed 78 patriotic parcels during the month, and the Institute had do- f nated 5, bringing the quota up to 83. These had been delivered- to the County Chambers. I » Mrs Winstone stated that all- the accounts for the catering for the Gymkhana had not yet been received, but it was hoped that a substantial sum would result from the effort. Four men, R. Becker, Parkes, F. Dallas and A. Burt had been fare-> I welled 'during the month. 4 . ° I
