FLOOD PROBLEM
DAMAGE TO STATION ROAD i EXGINEER'S REPORT L 1 In his monthly report to the County Council the Acting Engineer Mr R. O. Tomkins, stated as under: £ have been instructed to report on the question of taking some measures to prevent the overflowing of the road during the smaller floods. One proposal is that a small stopbank be built along the eastern side of the road to a maximum height of approximately 2ft. Gin. I have discussed the question with Mr lay lor of the Lands Department who stated that he could not favour the depositing of spoil in that posifibn as; the toe of the spoil would undoubtedly encroach too far on the berm of the drain and so hinder future dredge operations. From the J'oad point of view also it would be difficult to prevent such a bank from spreading over the road and further narrowing an already narrow road. Such spoil in any case would have, to be carted, to the site and. the bank to be effective Avould have to extend southwards beyond Boon's bridge, as far as Titoki bridge. Another proposal is that a stqpbank be built along the Western side of the road, permitting the llood waters to go on but not over the road. I would like the Works Commit-* tee to inspect this road, as it is very doubtful whether any half mea--sures in dealing with this problem would, be justified." The Works Committee decided to make an inspection in accordance with Mr Tomkins' suggestion.
