J i Sir,—This vexious burden of taxa- , tion keeps piling up steadily before, us. For many years it lias been the habit of Governments to hand the collection of rates and; taxes over to our Municipal Councils to collect, which they have done in a most efficient and arbitrary manner. I would ask why is it necessary ? Is it not proof that we are borrow-* ing our heads off, when the public institutions and services can, and should be financially maintained by the State and paid for through the consolidated funds. For the moment 1 am referring to the proposed loan for our hospital which should come under the heading of "Social Security." B would also refer to tha request for local committees to compile programmes of work in their respective districts, as part, of a rehabilitation scheme. I note that some of our councillors are rather keen on this stunt, but it is not being patriotic to rise the taxation directly on the ratepayers who will be also returned men. When the people of this, country demand: that their Municipal Councils take the lead to demand a financial , and monetary reform in their undertake
