FARMERS AND CARRIERS f > The much discussed question of transport was ' again before the > Auckland Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union 1 at its meeting on February 17. A report on the position in South Auckland, was presented by Mr Sexton (vice-president). Considerable discussion took place respecting the 15 per cent, increase . :n charges allowed to carriers. This 'vas operating only partially, and ; although carriers had shown that, their -costs had. been increased, there ".eemed to be need for a more equitable adjustment. On the motion of Mr Furniss, seconded by Mr A. E. Bryant (Te Awamutu), it Mas agreed that in view of the initiation of the Gov- 1 ernment's stabilisation policy, a meeting of representatives of the bodies interested be called to reconsider the arrangement that had been arrived at with the carriers. It was stated by the Minister of Defence in replj r to a communication regarding transport facilities that the general' policy Avas to spread sacrifices involved in reductions as evenly as possible, with due regard to the effect on National production! Country services .would not be cut. more rigorously than those, in city areas. The Minister added that he had noted carefully a suggestion that no truck should be sold, out of a district without the I approval of the Transport Appeal Committee. j t
