ENGINEERS MASCOT

of a goat as oui- mascot, but really no selection could have been more appropriate. Who but goats woukl dig, and sweat at A.A.C. positions, slit trenches, look-out posts, bomb-i pits, which when properly completed are promptly forgotten or filled in again. Still, we of the Engineers' Piatoon can take it. and. thrive on it. We have been given jobs to do, and we do them in the best of spirits apart from the verbal flow which describes the job . in question and the originators of such mystery jobs. Even Reverend Gentlemen and Traffic Officers, held, up by Engineers heaving and jacking road blocks across, the right-of-way would be justified in failing to differentiate between the Platoon and its mascot; but those who give any thought to the present world struggle must admit that without the goats nothing would be achieved. Thanking you, Mr Editor and Brother Platoons. (Signed) ONE OF THE GOATS.

' ySir, —The Engineers Platoon of the, Whakatane Home Guard are grates ful that at least some members of the other Platoons appreciate tlieir sterling worth and have been instrumental in securing for them a ' mascot, by the insertion of a recent advertisement. It is the Engineers* » intention to parade with their new- t ly acquired goat and thus give, the other Platoons a genuine excuse for finding other pressing military manoeuvres when asked to assist in f some really manual work such protective barb-wire enclosures. We also thanlc them for coupling us with such «a fine regiment as the Welsh Guards whom I understand, have a similar mascot.. It is, of . l course improbable that our friends *"|(f in the other Platoons have sensed ™ a deeper meaning in their selection
