A PUZZLE FOR PUNTERS

Arctic Dawn won the Paliiatua Cup with 9.0. For the Egmont Cup, tun a fortnight later, he was handicapped at 7.12 and including a penalty of 71bs carried 8.5. On the score of 'weight lie was considered, "a good thing," but on the. eventful day ran third to Night Ray 7.2 and Mahaina 7.5. DOES NOT STAY WELL Although the racing season is far advanced the English imported mare Celebrity does not run out six furlongs at all satisfactorily. In the Flying Handicap at Hawera she ran second to Expellant in 1.14 2 j 5, by no means a speedy performance. WINNING STRAIN^ Among the winners at the Wairoa fixture was Mr E. N. Fitzgerald's Daily Mail, who accounted for the Trial Handicap. She is a four j'ear old brown mare, by Kincardine from Sunny Sky by Hunting Son from 'Sunny Roe, by Sunny Lake. THE PATRIOTIC FUND The Auckland Racing Club will again this season devote the whole of its profits to the Patriotic Fund. Last year the sum donated was not up to the three figure mark, but the 3943 cheque, is 'likely to make a valuable addition to the fund. GOLD COURT RESUMES The Tractor—Court Lady gelding, Gold Court, has resumed work at Hastings. He is reported to be looking a picture. Last j-ear he won races in good company, and is expected to extend his winning list in the near future. HORSES FOR COURSES Like many other good performers the Canterbury owned Botany failed to show his form at the Wellington meeting, but a fortnight after at Riccarton -prevailed in the Middle Park Plate. Now that the sting will be. out of the ground for the rest of the season he may continue in the winning vein. CLASS A very fine type of thoroughbred, seen out at the: Rotorua meeting! was Mr James Clothier's Gold Stand, j a two year old by Mr Standfast from the Wanganui bred mare Golden Hair. In respect to conformation he is hard to fault, and although not up to concert pitch in racing condition has shown galloping ability. A STEEPLECHASER The Southland owned AngloFrench is now being prepared for another jumping season. The Sir Simper—Lorette gelding won three jumping events last year, and is now the. right age to do better. GOOD PRIZE MONEY The Great Northern Steeplechase this year will be worth £2000 and the Great Northern Hurdles £1750. If one horse can win this double the owner will receive quite a remunerative cheque. A GOOD STAKES WINNER The Hunting Song gelding, Rakaiiui, was purchased by Mr R. D . Jeff ares, of Hawke's, Bay, for 500 guineas. He has contested 4.2 races for 11 wins, 14 seconds and 4 thirds, and has won £5010 in prize money.
